As bloggers we're always raving about and recommending products, sharing our favourites with readers in the hopes that they'll find products they love too. But what happens to those products years down the line? Are the favourites we declared two years ago still our favourites or are they gathering dust at the back of a cupboard?
For me personally, my beauty stash has changed so much in the past 5 years never mind 10. Products I once bought over and over again have become a distant memory, replaced by newer launches or more expensive alternatives. So what has happened to those products I used to love? Am I still just as obsessed as I once was, or have I gone off them over the years in the same way I've gone off orange VKs and patterned tights?
Disclaimer: I came across this blog post a while back on From Roses, I've since seen other people do their take on it so I thought I'd join in with mine!
Maybelline Colossal Volume Express Mascara
This mascara was actually the first one I ever bought, and I loved the big, defined lashes it gave me. I don't know if it was when I started to add oils into my skincare routine or if the formula changed, but eventually this mascara began to smudge underneath my eyes and give me the dreaded panda look. I have this issue with a lot of mascaras now, it really is a shame it happened with this one because it was one of my favourite products ever back in the day.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in 'Dark Brown'
Not too nostalgic, this product was HUGE around 2014/15 and I quickly learnt what all the hype was about. I absolutely loved how it could define my brows, and I was still able to achieve a natural look easily. One of the big criticisms Dipbrow received was that it dries out quite quickly, but I actually find the dried up product a lot easier to work with. I've probably had my little tub for too long now, I use it daily so you can definitely say I've got my money's worth. I've tried some dupes but I always come back to this, you just can't beat the longevity of it at all.
Seventeen Phwoarr Paint Concealer
Another product I've had in my collection for longer than I should (noticing a theme here, whoops), I was sent this concealer by Seventeen to try out a few years ago. It's high coverage and does a fab job of concealing blemishes. I don't use it under my eyes as I find it's just too heavy and can crease, but it's so perfect for covering spots. I don't use this daily, but it comes out whenever my skin is playing up as I know I can count on it to work it's magic.
Max Factor Creme Puff Blush in 'Lavish Mauve'
Oh my word, I remember first getting this product and absolutely falling in love with it. It was a beautiful pinky blush with the most subtle highlight (before highlighting became a thing). I have used this to death over the years - so much so the lid fell off its hinges, and last week after almost a year of balancing the lid on, I lost it and the product went rock hard and unusable. This now has a firm place on my 'must buy when my bank account looks healthy again' list, it's such a beautiful blush and one I'm surprised doesn't get raved about more often.
Maybelline Colour Drama Lip Pencils
Anyone who watched my Instagram story on the day I took the photos for this post will already know what I'm about to say next. I unfortunately have had to throw these pencils away after opening them up to find them all furry. I'm still not sure if it was mould or ice, but either way they're not going anywhere near my lips any time soon! I used to love these lip pencils so much back in the day, but as my little story above would suggest, I haven't actually used them in a while. I love the formula so much, it's comfortable and very long lasting, without being ridiculously matte. I will be repurchasing some of these pencils because I really do love the formula, however I think I'll buy different shades as I just don't wear bright colours too often - I used to have a nude one that I adored but lost somewhere in life, so maybe I'll jump back on that.
La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo/AI
I put off buying these products for longer than I should have, because a lot of people recommending them had oily skin and mine is dry/dehydrated. When I eventually bought them I really loved them, especially the spot cream which cleared up my skin a dream. I still have the spot cream which is very much past it's best and needs to be thrown out, but I never repurchased the moisturiser after it ran out because whilst it didn't dry out my skin, it also didn't hydrate it much either. It was around that time I then became hooked on Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream and haven't looked back since. Recently though I have been noticing the texture of my skin is a lot rougher than usual, so I am considering repurchasing the Effaclar Duo and using it alongside the Kiehls because it really did clear my skin up wonderfully.
NYX Lip Lingerie
I can't remember if I've mentioned the NYX Lip Lingerie liquid lipsticks on this blog much, but I absolutely loved them. I wouldn't wear them day to day, as like all liquid lipsticks they are quite drying (I have very dry lips in general so most products dry them out), but I used to love wearing them for a night out as I knew I wouldn't need to worry about topping my lipstick up all night. I actually ended up losing both the shades I had, so I've got my eye on the Christmas vault set from Boots so I can try out all the shades.
